The Art of Change Leadership – Tolu Peters
The Art of Change Leadership is the ability to guide individuals, teams, and organizations through transformation, combining strategy, emotional intelligence, and adaptability.
How do you successfully lead others through Change:
Leading change requires:
• Vision – Clearly defining the direction and purpose of the change.
• Communication – Effectively articulating the reasons for change and inspiring others to embrace it.
• Emotional Intelligence – Understanding and addressing the emotions, resistance, and concerns of those affected.
• Adaptability – Being flexible and responsive to challenges as they arise.
• Empowerment – Encouraging and equipping people to take ownership of the change process. What Leadership Shifts are required for Change Success ? For successful change leadership, leaders must make key mindset and behavior shifts that include the following:
1. From Directive to Empowering
• Old Mindset: “I need to control and direct every step.”
• New Mindset: “I empower my team to take ownership of the change.”
• Why? People are more likely to embrace change when they feel involved and have a sense of control.
2. From Certainty to Curiosity
• Old Mindset: “I must have all the answers.”
• New Mindset: “I embrace uncertainty and encourage learning.”
• Why? Change brings ambiguity, and leaders who remain open to new ideas and learning help their teams navigate uncertainty.
3. From Resistance Avoidance to Resistance Engagement
• Old Mindset: “Resistance is bad and should be eliminated.”
• New Mindset: “Resistance is natural and provides valuable insights.”
• Why? Acknowledging and addressing concerns fosters trust and collaboration.
4. From Transactional to Transformational Leadership
• Old Mindset: “Change is about processes and policies.”
• New Mindset: “Change is about people and mindset shifts.”
• Why? Sustainable change happens when leaders focus on culture, mindset, and behavior, not just systems and structures.
5. From Short-Term Fixes to Long-Term Vision
• Old Mindset: “Let’s make quick changes and move on.”
• New Mindset: “Change is a journey that requires long-term commitment.”
• Why? True transformation takes time, and leaders must provide ongoing support and reinforcement.
6. From Leading Alone to Leading with Others
• Old Mindset: “I am the sole driver of this change.”
• New Mindset: “Change leadership is a shared responsibility.”
• Why? Engaging others as champions of change builds momentum and increases success.
7. From Communication to Conversation
• Old Mindset: “I just need to tell people what’s changing.”
• New Mindset: “I need to create ongoing dialogue and feedback loops.”
• Why? Two-way communication ensures people feel heard and invested in the change process.
In essence, successful change is not just about managing technical aspects, including logistics, but also about influencing, motivating, and guiding people in a way that makes transitions smoother and more impactful.

Celebrating Leadership: Highlights from the 2024 Global Leadership Program Launch
It was a pleasure to participate and moderate at the hybrid breakfast launch event of the Daniel Leadership Institute’s 2024 Global Leadership Program (GLP) on December 9, 2023 at JHDC, Silverspring Maryland.
We have 4 excellent global leaders who shared very insightful highlights from their leadership journey @Koko Glory Khumalo ( South Africa), @Kathryn Rock (USA), @Kunle Malomo (USA), and @Ayo Fatoki-Maji (Nigeria).
We also had two GLP Alums @Mary Akinkugbe and @Gbenga Lasisi and they engaged us in an interesting and funny conversation on where they are now, what they gained from the GLP experience.
Kudos to all the volunteer program managers led by @Michael Adenuga, and @Femi Olumoko (Deputy Director)
This event was fun, light, inspiring and the energy in the room was great. There was also excellent feedback from virtual attendees.
See you next year 😊❤️👍🏽

Gratitude, Growth, and Leadership: Celebrating a Season of Impact with...
As we approach Christmas, there continues to be many things for which I am thankful. One of these is the The Daniel Leadership Institute (DLI), a community leadership initiative, I lead on a voluntary basis.
On December 10, we launched the 7th cohort of the Global Leadership Program which provides managers with an opportunity to be mentored by C Suite leaders virtually for 6 months.
Secondly, we graduated the 18th cohort of the Young Professionals Mentoring Program, a year long program aimed at building leadership capacity in young professionals with 0-3 years.
Thirdly, During the month of November, the DLI Community Leadership Program’s Toastmasters Club held a Leadership conversation in which I was invited to be a panelist. Very engaging and interesting session.
I doff my hat to the numerous volunteers who themselves are mid to senior professionals in Consulting, fortune 100 companies, government, financial institutions etc. They work tirelessly and with a passion to impact the lives of others in the area of leadership development and I cannot be more grateful to do this work with them.
Wishing you all a joyful Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
